Embedded Clinician Program

The Embedded Clinician Program offers a unique and proactive approach to supporting the mental health and wellness of law enforcement personnel. By placing a licensed mental health professional directly within the department, the program fosters trust, accessibility, and a deeper understanding of officers' challenges. ​

Program Overview

​The program integrates mental health services into the department’s culture and operations. The clinician’s regular presence and involvement reduce stigma around seeking help while building relationships with officers and staff. The program typically includes:

Weekly On-Site Presence:

  • The clinician visits the department one day per week to provide:

    • Confidential Sessions: Private, one-on-one counseling for officers and staff.

    • Wellness Workshops: Group sessions on topics such as stress management, resilience, and coping strategies.

    • Open Office Hours: Drop-in availability for informal conversations or immediate concerns.

Ride-Alongs:

  • The clinician participates in regular ride-alongs with officers to:

    • Gain firsthand insight into the daily stressors and dynamics of law enforcement work.

    • Build rapport with officers in a non-clinical setting.

    • Offer real-time, situational guidance and support when appropriate.

24/7 Availability:

  • Outside of on-site hours, the clinician can be reached via phone, email, or virtual sessions to provide:

    • Immediate support during critical incidents.

    • Follow-up care for ongoing challenges.

    • Guidance for supervisors handling wellness concerns within their teams.

Customized Support:

  • The clinician collaborates with department leadership to develop tailored wellness initiatives, such as:

    • Programs addressing high-stress roles (e.g., SWAT or undercover assignments).

    • Family support services for officers’ loved ones.

    • Strategies to reduce organizational stress, such as improving work-life balance and shift scheduling.
